I enjoyed reading your book The Spine of The Virginias. It brought back many memories of days gone bye.
Born in 1939 on a small farm owned by my grandparents in Marion County West Virginia, I spent many summers experiencing the lives of those who lived off the land and survived through hard labor. They had no motor vehicles or machinery, no indoor plumbing and I was probably thirteen before they had electricity.
Although I am a transplant and have lived in Roanoke since 1960, I am a Mountaineer at heart. My school days at Pineville High, WVU, and WVIT were most enjoyable. I moved to Roanoke for employment at General Electric as an electrical engineer getting my engineering degree at Virginia Tech. So I am a Hokie and a Mountaineer.
Your book reminded me of the many enjoyable aspects of mountain life and the people who were part of my early life, but also of the cold winters, outside johns, no running water and hitch-hiking.
Thanks for a great reflection on a wonderful land and great people.
We have enjoyed your book immensely. My husband and I like to read before bed together, he reads to me. I enjoy, so much, being read to. He has been reading your book to me, and taking turns with American short stories. Your book is a perfect format for that. Just wanted to give you an update on how much we enjoy it.
Just started your book, Union, WV, and
haven't been able to put it down. I'm on page 62.
I stopped to take a break and just decided to write you.
So I'm trying to get comfortable on the couch and start again.
A few days later...
I finished "Union WV". I must say, it was very interesting,
entertaining, and infomatiive. It makes me want to go and
visit Union. It is the first book I've read from cover to cover
in probably 30 years. My wife couldn't believe I was reading
a book! Now she wants to read it.. It kept my attention captured,
and probably would have read it in one sitting if I hadn't gotten
sleepy! I hope to start your other book real soon.
